Tunstall's a proper market town in its own right, not just another postcode off the ring road — its own high street, its own square at the top of it, and terraced streets running back off both that have been there long before Stoke-on-Trent joined the six towns together. Close to the centre, the pipework's older and much-altered: narrow-gauge supply, stopcocks buried under laminate or painted shut, sometimes a run of old lead still doing a job it shouldn't be. Nothing unusual for a Tunstall terrace — just worth knowing before the first fitting comes off.
Head out to Chell and Great Chell, and Pittshill, and the housing turns interwar and post-war council-built — semis with loft cold-water tanks, cast-iron waste stacks that have earned their age, and combi boilers retrofitted into systems that were never designed around one. Goldenhill and Sandyford sit in between, older streets and newer infill mixed together, and the newest developments run out toward Kidsgrove and the Cheshire border, where Tunstall stops being Stoke-on-Trent at all.
Being the town furthest north means some citywide firms based near the centre treat Tunstall as the edge of their run — worth a special trip, if they come at all. It's the opposite for us: planned windows come through as often as anywhere else in Staffordshire, no distance premium for being at the top of the map.

Our house is one of the older terraces near Tower Square — is the plumbing likely to cause problems a newer estate wouldn't?
Often, yes. The terraces close to Tower Square tend to have original, much-altered pipework — narrow-gauge supply, a stopcock that's been painted over or buried under a floor, sometimes a stretch of old lead still in there. Out at the Chell and Pittshill estates the housing's interwar and post-war council-built, with its own set of usual suspects — loft cold-water tanks, old cast-iron waste stacks, combis retrofitted into a system that wasn't built for one.
